Mora struck out six Yaquis batsmen and gave up only a first-inning single to Agustin Murillo while retiring 18 of the 20 Obregon hitters he faced. Yaquis starter Francisley Bueno was almost as good in six frames of work, but he coughed up a leadoff homer by Eduardo Arredondo in the top of the sixth to break a scoreless tie. The score held until the bottom of the seventh, when Guasave’s Jesus Lopez handcuffed shortstop Everth Cabrera for a bases-loaded infield single to make it a 2-0 Algodoneros lead.
Pinch-hitter Albino Contreras’ RBI single in the eighth gave Obregon their first run, but reliever Alan Guerrero came in to dominate both Elian Herrera and former MexPac MVP Murillo on swinging strikeouts with bases loaded to end the threat. Guerrero then struck out both Victor Diaz and Doug Clark swinging before inducing Iker Franco into a tapper to third for the game’s final out in the ninth.
The two teams meet again Wednesday night in Guasave.
