HERMOSILLO AWARDED 2013 CARIBBEAN SERIES

At an August meeting of the Mexican Pacific League governors, the Hermosillo Naranjeros were named as hosts for the 2013 Caribbean Series. The 2013 CS will mark the sixth time Hermosillo has hosted the event (and the first time since 1997).

The decision apparently did not sit well with Culiacan Tomateros president Juan Manuel Ley, who was quoted in Culiacan’s El Debate newspaper as wondering why the Los Mochis Caneros (who, like the Tomateros, are based in the state of Sinaloa) voted to award the series to Hermosillo and not Culiacan. Hermosillo is in the state of Sonora, whose residents have a great rivalry with Sinaloans. Culiacan hosted the Caribbean Series once in 2005.

The CS rotates evenly between Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Next February’s event will be hosted in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico at Isidoro Garcia Baseball Stadium, a $48.5 million facility seating 10,500 that opened last February.
