MEX PAC CONSIDERS, TABLE EXPANSION
The Mexican Pacific League held their monthly assembly April 28 in Mexicali, including league chairman Omar Canizales, league manager Oviel Dennis and directors of all eight Mex Pac teams. There were a number of topics for discussion, including possible future expansion of the circuit into Tijuana and Ensenada.
Tijuana is no stranger to the Mex Pac, having had teams in the league in the past. Though the city would be the LMP’s largest, it has also had a spotty history in baseball with teams coming and going at an alarming rate. A Tijuana entry in the independent Golden League had to move to Yuma, Arizona in the middle of last season due to problems. The Mex Pac has held preseason tournaments there with some success.
Ensenada does not have the population base Tijuana does, but its Marineros are one of the stronger franchises in the Class A Northern League (in which Tijuana also has an entry, the Potros) as well as funding for a new ballpark. The addition of either city would lessen the isolation of the Mexicali Aguilas, who are almost 500 miles away from Navojoa, the closest other LMP rival. Both Tijuana and Ensenada have applied for LMP franchises.
Expansion was ultimately tabled for later discussion but it’s not likely to go away soon in the Mex Pac, although attendance problems in Navojoa may have to be dealt with first. While the other seven LMP teams drew 5,000 or more fans per game last winter, the Mayos averaged fewer than 2,000.

SARAPEROS’ PRESICHI RECORDS 1,000th LIGA HIT
Saltillo Saraperos outfielder Cristian Presichi registered the 1,000th hit of his Mexican League career Tuesday night in a road game against archrival Monterrey. Presichi has played all 12 years of his Liga career with Saltillo.
The 30-year-old Presichi, who hails from Mexicali, reached his milestone in the bottom of the fourth inning against Sultanes’ pitcher Antonio Garzon, a frame in which the defending champions pushed eight runs across the plate en route to a 12-10 victory over Monterrey. Presichi actually singled twice that inning, with the historic knock coming during his second trip to the plate. A respected player throughout the circuit, Presichi doffed his batting helmet in response to applause from the Monterrey fans.
“Thank God I’m here,” Presichi remarked afterward. “It means a lot to reach this mark with a single team. I dedicate this to my wife, son and daughter, who give me the strength to be here, and to my parents.” He also thanked the fans. “They’ve always treated me very well."
The 6-foot right-handed hitter has an LMB career .326 average with 116 homers for the Sarape Makers. Thus far in 2011, Presichi is hitting .339 with a homer in 16 games.

VASQUEZ OUT, VEGA IN AS OAXACA SKIPPER
After only one month as manager of the Oaxaca Guerreros, Marco Antonio Vasquez is gone. Vasquez took over as helmsman in Oaxaca after last year’s BBM Manager of the Year Eddie Diaz resigned to accept a full-time scouting job for the Tampa Bay Rays. He compiled a 11-16 record with Oaxaca.
Vasquez is being replaced on an interim basis by Guerreros coach Abelardo “Cachorro” Vega, a longtime veteran of Mexican baseball. A 64-year-old Sinaloa native, Vega started out as a pitcher before spending 18 seasons as a third baseman in the Mexican League (13 of those with the Mexico City Diablos Rojos), batting .286 with 54 homers and 727 RBIs over 1,638 games between 1968 and 1984.
Following his playing career, Vega got into coaching and has also managed the Tijuana Potros and Minatitlan Petroleros as well as fill-in stints with both the Diablos and Guerreros. Since taking the reins in Oaxaca on April 23, the Guerreros have won three straight games under Vega.

Online voting for the 79th annual Mexican League All-Star Game next month is now underway. Liga fans will have until one minute before midnight on Sunday, May 15 to send in ballots choosing All-Star starters for both the Northern and Southern Zones on the LMB website at www.lmb.com.mx.
Saltillo Saraperos manager Orlando Sanchez will guide the Northern squad while Quintana Roo Tigres skipper Matias Carrillo will head up the Southern team.
The 2011 All-Star Weekend will take place May 27-29 in Saltillo at Estadio Francisco I. Madero, which was remodeled during the off-season.
Last year’s All-Star festivities took place in Chihuahua, with the North (or “Zona Madero” to denote Mexico’s bicentennial year) defeated the South (Zona Hidalgo), 4-3, as Reynosa center fielder Leo Heras singled in Monclova’s Saul Soto with the eventual winning run in the seventh inning en route to winning MVP honors. MEZA OUT, PAQUIN IN AS PETROS SKIPPER
The merry-go-round that is the Minatitlan Petroleros managerial job took another spin this week when Cuban skipper Victor Meza submitted his resignation after an 11-15 start to the season. While the Petros’ current record is not panic-inducing, the pitching staff’s 6.01 ERA is.
Enter Francisco “Paquin” Estrada.
A Salon de la Fama member who caught more games (2,847) than any other player in minor league baseball history, Estrada (pictured) is being brought into Minatitlan to address the team’s pitching woes while bringing a sense of calm that may have eluded the Petros under the volatile Meza, whose managerial reign in Veracruz last year likewise was a short one. Estrada has led several pennant-winners in both the Mexican and Mexican Pacific leagues and managed Mexico’s entry in the 2006 World Baseball Classic.
This is the second time a Mexican League team has changed managers in the past week. Last Saturday, Gerardo “Polvorita” Sanchez (himself a Salon member as a player) was relieved as helmsman for the Monclova Acereros. Marco Antonio Davalillo, son of former player and manager Pompeyo and nephew of ex-MLBer Vic, has taken over as Monclova’s manager.
And it’s only April, folks.

After deciding to send the daily Mexican League results over to a new Baseball Mexico group page on Facebook and returning to the old short-story format three days a week on the BBM blog to address declining blog readership, it finally occurred to me: Why can't I do both results AND stories on both Facebook and the blog? SURPRISING AGUILAS LEAD LMB SOUTH STANDINGS
Not a great deal was expected from the Veracruz Aguilas in 2011. The team missed the Mexican League playoffs last season and was considered to have an outside shot at reaching the postseason this time around.
However, the Aguilas have come out of the gate with 18 wins in their first 26 games to pull in to a four-game lead in the LMB South standings ahead of 14-12 Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Veracruz has won eight of their last ten games and gone 10-3 at home. A big reason has been the Liga-leading 43 homers the Aguilas have hit, 28 of them coming from Victor Diaz and Jorge Guzman alone. Starter Joel Vargas has been one beneficiary, going 4-1 to start the year.
In the LMB North, things are a little tighter. Mexico City and Monterrey are tied for first at 16-10, two games up on 13-11 Puebla. The Diablos had a huge 14-13 win over Saltillo Sunday night at Foro Sol. After the defending champion Saraperos scored twice in the top of the ninth to go ahead 13-10, the Diablos scored four in the bottom of the frame to win it.
Mexico City first baseman Japhet Amador leads the Liga with a .433 average while Diablos second baseman Jose Castillo is second at .403 but overall, batting is down a little in the LMB thus far as only five of the usually hit-happy circuit’s 14 teams are above the .300 mark.
