OBREGON ONE WIN AWAY FROM LMP FINALS

The Obregon Yaquis have taken a 3-games-to-0 lead over Los Mochis in their Mexican Pacific League semifinal series while Guasave came to within 2-games-to-1 in their set with Culiacan Friday.

Obregon erased an early 1-0 Mochis lead with four runs in the top of the fourth innings, three of them crossing the plate on a Daniel Fornes (pictured)double. The Caneros got two back in the bottom of the frame as Saul Soto cracked a solo homer, but former MexPac MVP Agustin Murillo gave the Yaquis a 6-3 advantage with a two-run longball in the fifth off Mochis hurler Luis Vazquez (gracias, Carlos). Marco Quevedo left the contest with a 6-3 lead in the fifth and came away with the win for Obregon.

Culiacan chased Guasave starter Mauricio Lara with five runs in the top of the second inning, including a three-run homer from Oakland farmhand Archie Gilbert. The Algodoneros fought back to take a 6-5 lead on Jesus Lopez’ two-run double to left. Closer Ken Ray came on for Guasave in the ninth and held on for the save when, with one out and runners on first and second, he induced Jorge Vazquez to slap a game-ending double play grounder to Lopez at short.

Los Mochis and Guasave will both host games Saturday.
