VERACRUZ WINTER LEAGUE OPENS PLAY AUGUST 26

When does a “winter” baseball league begin playing games during the summer? If it’s the Veracruz Winter League (or Liga Inveral Veracruzana, or LIV), opening day falls on Thursday, August 26, when the defending champion Las Tuxtlas Brujos host the Cordoba Cafeteros.

The Las Tuxtlas-Cordoba matchup is the only game scheduled on August 26, while the other eight teams in LIV kick off their respective 2009-10 seasons one day later: The Coatzacoalcos Dragones are set to host the Veracruz Rojos, the Xalapa Chileros will entertain the Santa Rosa Gallos, the Soledad Toros will be in Cosamaloapan to battle the Broncos, and the Minatitlan Gavilanes will be at home against Cayenne Island on Friday. Coatzacoalcos and Cayenne Island are expansion teams this season.

LIV teams will play 75-game regular season schedules until December 22, followed by playoffs. Los Tuxtlas beat Xalapa in the championship series last January.
